Read about the Scents of Mummification & Afterlife kit here.

May 30th & August 1st: Hknw, Meaning JOY (Ancient Egyptian Perfume)

In this class we will recreate a perfume called Hknw, meaning “joy” in Egyptian. This fragrance is one of the seven sacred oils used in the temples of Egypt to anoint the gods and in the process of mummification to preserve the dead.

The recipe is preserved on the walls of the Ptolemaic temple of Edfu. However, its existence can be traced back to as early as the 4th Dynasty. The recipe is long, complicated and intriguing. The attention to detail, the processing of the materials and the patience to make it (one year!) are fascinating.

STRUCTURE

  • 1st hour: Lecture on the history of the seven sacred oils. We will investigate how the usage, religious significance and number of the oils changed throughout Egyptian history from the Old Kingdom until the Ptolemaic period. Special attention will be paid to documents discussing the Hknw perfume.
  • 2nd hourReading and understanding the recipe, followed by an insight into the materials.
  • 3rd hour: Now that we understand all the steps of the recipe, we will explore ways of recreating the ancient Hknw perfume

BONUS! June 6th, 2021: Smellscapes

The sense of smell plays a crucial role in place perception and experience, as it enables direct encounters with the environment in ways that sight and hearing cannot, creating an unmediated sense of place. Experiences of smells in the city occur at specific points of space and time, as a result of human activities, the nature of the built environment and geographic factors.

Dora was inspired by modern urban smellscape studies and applied their theories and methods to her research on the sense of smell in ancient Egypt. She reconstructed the smell genetics of ancient Egyptian cities by employing ancient Egyptian written documents with relevance to the sense of smell from all periods of pharaonic history and placing them in an urban context.

In this two-hour lecture, we will go on a smellwalk in an ancient Egyptian city and investigate the various meanings of odors experienced during our walk and then create understandings of olfactory space in the ancient Egyptian urban environment. Together , we will walk from the royal palace to the treasury, temple, House of Life, stables, and through the streets of the city, to the private residences, gardens and workshops. We will discover their smellscapes on regular days, and also during festive occasions, such as yearly processional festivals and banquets. After learning about the smellscapes of the world of the living, we will continue our smellwalk to the necropolis and discover the smells that defined the mummification chambers and tombs.

The workshop aims at uncovering the hidden realities of ancient Egyptian urban living previously unexperienced and unimagined. It invites us to reorient our senses, so that visualization becomes passive and olfaction becomes active. Through focusing on the olfactory, we will gain a new perspective on the ancient Egyptians’ interaction with their environment.
