Each workshop in the Scents of Egypt Series has the option to purchase a kit directly from our brilliant instructor Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith who personally designed the educational kit for each class in the series. The kits are made with authentic raw materials sourced from the areas that supplied the Egyptians with perfume ingredients in antiquity. The kits include Dora’s reconstruction of each ancient Egyptian perfume as well.

The kits are NOT mandatory but highly recommended to fully experience the depth of knowledge that Dora will be sharing with us. To pre-order the kits, send an e-mail directly to Dora: doragold@zedat.fu-berlin.de. 

Those who pre-order all kits for the series will receive an ancient Egyptian skincare kit as a gift, which includes an anti-aging cream and a face wash based on medical recipes.

Dora creates each kit from the authentic plant matter from Egypt, thus there are limited numbers and we highly encourage you to pre-order yours before they sell out. The kits will be mailed out from Berlin.

 

 

➵ Kyphi Kit

With the Kyphi Kit you can make your own kyphi by following the kyphi recipes of Edfu step-by-step. Kyphi is one of the first documented perfumes in the world. Kyphi is unique in ancient Egyptian perfumery because it is the only perfume that is documented both in the temples and in everyday life, thus allowing a comparison of its sacred and mundane use.

The “MEDJET KIT” includes all the ingredients to make the gods’ sacred temple ointment. The base of mD.t (likely pronounced "medjet" or "madjet") was beef tallow, which was strongly perfumed with resins, barks and roots, and finally dyed red.

➵ Hekenu Kit

With the “HEKENU KIT” you can make your own hekenu perfume by following the ancient Egyptian recipe step-by-step. Hkn.w (likely pronounced "hekenu"), meaning “joy” in Egyptian, was one of the sacred perfumes used in the temples of Egypt to anoint the gods and in the process of mummification to preserve the dead.

➵ Ti-Shepes Kit of Hathor

With the “TI-SHEPES KIT OF HATHOR” you can make Hathor’s sacred perfume by following the ancient Egyptian recipe step-by-step. The laboratory of the temple of Edfu from the Ptolemaic period is inscribed with the recipe of a perfume called ti-Sps (pronounced likely “ti-shepes”). The inscription notes that it is the perfume of the goddess Hathor: “perfume for Hathor, lady of Dendera”. The beginning of the recipe informs us that the product is used to anoint the body of the goddess, thus it was a sacred scent for rituals: “Instructions for making this ti-shepes perfume of best quality of styrax: 1 hin to anoint the Golden One (=Hathor)”.

For the Colors & Craftsman of Perfumery class Dora has created the “EVERYDAY COSMETIC KIT”, which makes three products based on their ancient Egyptian recipes, which are all preserved on medical papyri:

The goal of this kit is to introduce you to the world of everyday perfumes and cosmetics designed for people. These products are perfect not only for learning, but also for having your own ancient Egyptian wellness day!

“HATHOR’S PERFUME COCKTAIL KIT” makes two fragrant drinks: the beer-based drink (right) and the wine-based drink (left). These cocktails are not only great for learning about the intersection of perfumery and cocktail-making in ancient Egypt, but they can also be a fun activity to do with friends! The kit comes with instructions and an amphora of Dora’s own reconstruction of each cocktail to guide your work and to drink. The kit also includes some surprising ingredients, such as edible gold, lapis lazuli stone, a tiny millstone, and a clay seal with an imprint of Hathor’s face.
